FG Aims for 5 Million LPG Cylinders by 2030 in Push for Cleaner Cooking Solutions

The Federal Government has raised its clean energy ambition by setting a new target to distribute five million Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to households across Nigeria by 2030. This is a significant increase from the earlier goal of reaching one million homes within the same period.

The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, during the launch of the Northwest LPG grassroots distribution programme in Sokoto State. He stated that the initiative is a major part of Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” agenda, aimed at expanding access to cleaner cooking alternatives and reducing the country’s dependence on firewood and other harmful fuels.

According to the minister, the plan is to convert one million households per year over the next five years, helping to improve health conditions, especially for women and children exposed to smoke from traditional cooking methods. He added that the move would also boost local job creation and support Nigerian manufacturers and suppliers involved in the LPG supply chain.

Ekpo called on beneficiaries to embrace and promote the use of LPG in their communities, encouraging them to become advocates of clean energy in their everyday lives.

He thanked Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu and the Sultan of Sokoto for their continued support, and gave special recognition to BUA Group for sponsoring the distribution of LPG cylinders—an effort that helps bring clean energy to underserved areas.

Ed Ubong, Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Secretariat, also highlighted the importance of the initiative, calling it a key step in encouraging more Nigerians to shift away from biomass fuels and adopt cleaner energy sources for both domestic and industrial use.

The programme is aligned with Nigeria’s long-term energy diversification goals and its broader commitment to sustainable development.
