The Federal Government has vowed to end the importation of solar panels, revealing Nigeria has spent over N200 billion on imports so far.
Speaking at a roundtable in Lagos, REA MD Abba Aliyu said, “We’re domesticating solar manufacturing, and Lagos will lead the charge.” A PV plant in Ikotun has already scaled from 10MW to 110MW, he noted.
Aliyu also announced a $150 million lithium battery plant in the works with Green World.
Meanwhile, Minister of Science and Tech, Uche Nnaji, said local production will be backed by Presidential Executive Order No. 5.
But REAN warned, “A ban without boosting local capacity risks derailing progress.”
The solar sector powers millions—balancing import restrictions with growth is now key.
