The Federal Government has called for stronger coordination among agencies and stakeholders in Nigeria’s power sector, saying poor coordination is slowing efforts to provide reliable electricity to Nigerians.

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, made the call on Monday in Abuja during the announcement of a new Off-Grid Stakeholder Coordination initiative.

Tegbe, who was represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Adelabu, said the fragmented structure of the power sector had contributed to duplicated efforts, missed investment opportunities and delays in delivering electricity projects.

He said better coordination among government agencies, private companies, development partners and other stakeholders would help accelerate electrification across the country.

The Minister also stressed the need for stakeholders to work with a common approach rather than operating independently, particularly as Nigeria expands its off-grid electricity programmes.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, said the agency was supporting the creation of a central coordination platform to improve visibility of ongoing projects and ensure resources are deployed more efficiently.

Aliyu said the growing number of investors, government institutions and development partners involved in off-grid power made it necessary to establish an Off-Grid Sector Coordination Secretariat.

According to him, the platform would provide a structured system for cooperation among government institutions, development partners, private-sector operators and other stakeholders.

The initiative is expected to improve information sharing, reduce duplication of projects and support better planning as Nigeria continues efforts to expand access to electricity, particularly in communities outside the national grid.
