Fuel Imports Crash by 67% as Local Refineries Boost Output — NMDPRA

Nigeria’s petrol imports have plummeted by 67%, dropping from 44.6 million litres per day in August 2024 to just 14.7 million litres by mid-April 2025, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

The dramatic fall follows a 670% surge in local production, which jumped from 3.4 million litres daily in September to 26.2 million litres by April.

NMDPRA boss Farouk Ahmed attributed the gains to the phased restart of the Port Harcourt refinery and increased output from modular refineries.

Despite the uptick, combined supply has only exceeded the government’s 50 million litres/day benchmark twice in eight months.
