Fuel Prices Drop 11% Year-on-Year, NBS Reports

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a significant drop in the average retail price of petrol over the past year. According to the NBS Petrol Price Watch for October 2025, the average cost per litre fell from N1,184.83 in October 2024 to N1,052.31, representing an 11.18% year-on-year decrease.

However, the report noted that compared to September 2025, the price of petrol increased by 8.42%, rising from N970.59 per litre.

State-level analysis showed that Kogi recorded the highest average petrol price at N1,110.00 per litre, followed closely by Sokoto (N1,105.93) and Borno (N1,101.63). On the lower end, Oyo (N1,001.79), Nasarawa (N1,009.38), and Abia (N1,012.50) had the cheapest prices. By zone, the North-East had the highest average price at N1,072.74, while the South-West recorded the lowest at N1,032.81.

The NBS also released its Diesel Price Watch for October 2025, showing the average retail price of diesel at N1,398.57 per litre, a 2.96% decrease from N1,441.28 in October 2024. Month-on-month, diesel prices increased by 9.45% from N1,277.81 per litre in September 2025.

At the state level, Enugu had the highest diesel price at N1,468.29 per litre, followed by Niger (N1,465.69) and Jigawa (N1,437.40). The lowest diesel prices were in Katsina (N1,301.24), Edo (N1,307.84), and Kebbi (N1,308.94). By zone, the South-East recorded the highest diesel prices at N1,415.85, while the South-South had the lowest at N1,387.18.

The NBS attributed the variations to market dynamics and regional supply factors, providing insight into fuel cost trends across Nigeria.
