The Obafemi Awolowo Train Station in Moniya, Ibadan has been without electricity after being disconnected by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) due to unpaid bills.
IBEDC confirmed that the 33kV feeder that powers the station was shut off because the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), which runs the station, failed to pay its outstanding electricity debt. The disconnection, which reportedly happened last month, has left the station off the national grid, with no supply restored as of June 26.
The station was moved to Band A in 2024, which significantly increased its electricity tariff—more than doubling the amount it previously paid. This has contributed to the mounting debt. IBEDC has used similar disconnection measures in the past to press public institutions like UCH and Liberty Stadium to pay their electricity bills.
In a recent update, the company explained that several of its Band A customers had experienced power outages due to technical faults, grid issues, and in some cases, non-payment. It noted that while most of those issues had been resolved, the Moniya feeder remains shut due to the ongoing debt.
IBEDC’s spokesperson, Angela Olanrewaju, confirmed the disconnection but declined to reveal the amount owed, citing privacy laws. She said the company is in talks with the train station’s management to resolve the matter.
Efforts to get NRC’s response were still pending at the time of reporting, as its spokesperson said he would follow up and get back to the press.
The Moniya terminal, renamed in honour of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is a major stop on the Lagos–Ibadan railway route. The lack of electricity could disrupt the operations of the station, which serves hundreds of passengers daily and relies on power for essential services like ticketing, security checks, and waiting areas.
