India Denies Trump’s Claim That It Has Stopped Buying Russian Oil

The Indian government has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that India has ended its oil imports from Russia.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said India “won’t be buying Russian oil anymore.” His comment quickly drew attention, as India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that no such decision had been made.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there had been no recent communication between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue. According to him, the last conversation between the two leaders took place on October 9, when they discussed trade relations and Trump’s Gaza peace initiative.

Jaiswal reaffirmed that India continues to import oil from Russia based on its national interest and energy security needs. “Our energy purchases are guided by what benefits the Indian people,” he said.

Trump’s statement came amid ongoing global scrutiny of India’s relationship with Moscow, as Western countries maintain sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

While addressing the press, Trump also made a lighthearted remark about President Zelenskyy’s outfit, calling it “beautiful” and “stylish.” However, his comments about India’s oil imports overshadowed the moment, sparking renewed debate about U.S.-India diplomatic relations.
