Lagos seeks fresh private capital for electricity sector

The Lagos State Government is set to use the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit to attract new private-sector investment and strengthen the state’s electricity market.

The state’s Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said the summit would provide an opportunity for investors and industry stakeholders to examine developments in Lagos’ power sector and identify areas requiring investment.

The second edition of the summit, themed “Lagos Energy Evolution: Transforming the Future,” is scheduled for November 10 and 11 at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was earlier planned for September but was postponed to November to allow the organisers to make additional preparations.

A key issue expected to dominate discussions is the implementation of the Lagos State Electricity Law, 2024, which provides a framework for greater private-sector involvement in the state’s electricity industry.

Ogunleye said the summit would also seek to strengthen partnerships capable of delivering improvements across electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

The commissioner noted that the event would bring together government officials, regulators, investors, development partners, energy companies and innovators to discuss the future of Lagos’ power sector.

Participants are expected to examine opportunities in renewable energy, electricity infrastructure, decentralised power generation and energy financing, as well as how improved electricity supply can support Lagos’ ambition of operating a 24-hour economy.

The summit will feature investment roundtables, technical sessions, exhibitions and business-to-business meetings, with participants expected to explore potential partnerships and investment agreements.

The state government also plans technical visits to selected energy projects to give investors and other participants a closer look at ongoing developments within Lagos’ energy infrastructure.
