The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed that between 600,000 and 700,000 electricity meters are currently available for deployment nationwide, calling on distribution companies (DisCos) to accelerate their rollout and improve public communication.

Speaking at the 4th NESI Stakeholders Meeting in Abuja, NERC Vice Chairman Musiliu Oseni emphasized that the government has already invested in making the meters available. He stressed that it is now the responsibility of the DisCos to ensure the meters reach consumers promptly.

“There are currently 600,000 to 700,000 meters available in the country. Utilities must improve publicity. The government has made the investment, so the DisCos need to step up,” Oseni said.

He also addressed the ongoing transition to State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, urging full cooperation from the DisCos and reminding them that no operator is above regulatory oversight.

Additionally, Oseni clarified misinformation regarding NERC commissioners’ tenure. He explained that while the “staggering principle” in Section 36 of the Electricity Act applied only to the pioneer commission, all subsequent chairmen and commissioners serve fixed five-year terms.

The meeting marked Oseni’s final NESI stakeholders’ session in his capacity as Vice Chairman.
