The Niger State Government has set a target of generating one gigawatt of solar power by 2030 as part of its plan to expand renewable energy and strengthen electricity supply across the state.

Governor Umaru Bago disclosed the plan while receiving officials from ALDESA Group, a renewable energy company and subsidiary of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

Bago said the state had secured additional funding for a new 200-megawatt solar power project, which would further increase its renewable energy capacity.

He disclosed that the procurement process for the project had begun, with bids already opened for interested companies.

The governor also invited CCECC to participate in the bidding process, assuring the company that its proposal would be considered alongside other submissions in accordance with the state’s procurement requirements.

During the meeting, CCECC Executive Director, Austin Qi, presented an overview of the company’s renewable energy activities in Nigeria and other countries.

Qi said the company’s projects were guided by safety, quality and sustainability, while expressing its readiness to deepen cooperation with the Niger State Government in developing clean energy infrastructure.

The planned expansion forms part of Niger State’s broader efforts to increase its use of renewable energy and attract investment into the sector.

If successfully implemented, the solar projects are expected to contribute significantly to the state’s electricity capacity while supporting economic activities and reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.
