Nigeria Exports 950,000 Barrels of New Crude Oil

Nigeria has successfully exported 950,000 barrels of a new crude oil blend called Cawthorne, marking a significant milestone for the country’s oil sector. The shipment was carried out through the FSO Cawthorne, Nigeria’s first new crude oil terminal in 50 years.

The Cawthorne blend, a light sweet crude, was exported following approval and licensing by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). The FSO Cawthorne supports offshore production by providing storage and export capabilities for oil from OML 18 and nearby assets.

Energy company Sahara Group, a partner in the OML 18 project, highlighted the advanced technology on FSO Cawthorne, including AI monitoring systems and strong safety and environmental standards. The firm praised NNPC Limited for its leadership and collaboration in ensuring efficient operations.

Dr. Tosin Etomi, Head of Commercial and Planning at Asharami Energy, a Sahara Group subsidiary, described the crude export as a key moment for Nigeria’s upstream oil sector. He noted that the facility strengthens Nigeria’s energy security and aligns with long-term plans for operational excellence and sustainable growth.

Sahara Group also commended regulatory bodies, host communities, and key partners for their support in making the export possible. The milestone underscores Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing its oil production and export infrastructure while promoting indigenous participation and technological innovation.
