The Federal Government has unveiled plans to establish 4,000 megawatts of renewable energy manufacturing capacity across several states, in a move aimed at boosting local production and advancing clean energy adoption nationwide.
The initiative, led by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), was announced in a communiqué released after the Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF) meeting held from October 14 to 15, 2025, in Abuja. The session was chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
According to the communiqué, the project is a key part of the government’s Nigeria First Policy for the power sector and seeks to strengthen local participation in renewable energy manufacturing.
“The partnership aims to deliver 4,000MW of renewable energy manufacturing capacity and drive value-chain development across participating states,” the statement read.
The REA noted that the plan targets achieving 50 percent local content within three years, a move expected to reduce dependence on foreign imports and create new job opportunities within the clean energy value chain.
Officials say the renewable energy manufacturing drive will focus on scaling up local production of solar panels, batteries, inverters, and other clean energy components to support both on-grid and off-grid power solutions.
Analysts believe the initiative could mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s transition to sustainable energy, aligning with global efforts to cut carbon emissions and expand access to electricity in underserved communities.
