The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has distanced itself from a fuel tanker intercepted in Ondo State with 2,145 kilogrammes of cannabis concealed inside it.

The vehicle, identified by registration number MKA 960 XC, reportedly carried markings linked to NNPC. However, the national oil company said its initial checks found no record showing that the truck belonged to the company or operated under the fleet of any of its authorised dealers.

In a statement issued by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, on Monday, NNPC said the branding on the tanker also appeared to be outdated and did not match the company’s current corporate identity.

The company said it was working with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners to determine who owns the truck and why its former branding was displayed on the vehicle.

NNPC stressed that it takes the unauthorised use of its name and corporate identity seriously, particularly when such branding is connected to criminal activities.

It said it would cooperate with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other security agencies as investigations continue into the seizure.

According to the company, the ongoing probe would establish how the vehicle was being operated, who was responsible for it and how the NNPC markings ended up on the tanker.

NNPC added that it was reviewing its systems for monitoring its assets and protecting its brand. It also warned that legal action could be taken against individuals found to have unlawfully used its corporate identity.

The company urged the public and relevant authorities to verify claims of affiliation with NNPC through official channels before accepting vehicles or businesses as part of its operations.

NNPC also praised the NDLEA for intercepting the consignment and reaffirmed its support for efforts to curb drug trafficking across the country.
