NUPRC Investigates Gas Bubbling in Rivers Community

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has launched an investigation into a gas seepage incident reported in Bille Community, raising concerns about safety, environmental impact, and public health.

The agency said it moved swiftly after receiving reports of gas bubbles emerging from the ground and surrounding water areas- an occurrence typically linked to trapped gas escaping from beneath the surface.

In a statement, the commission’s leadership expressed concern over the development and reassured residents that efforts are underway to determine the cause and address any potential risks. It acknowledged the anxiety within the community, noting that such incidents could have implications for both human health and the environment.

According to the regulator, a coordinated technical investigation has already been activated, involving multiple stakeholders. The process is expected to examine the scale of the seepage, trace its origin, and recommend both immediate and long-term solutions.

Preliminary observations suggest the phenomenon may be linked to underground geological activity, although authorities stress that further studies are required to confirm this.

Ongoing geotechnical and geological assessments are expected to provide clearer insights into the source and possible mitigation measures.

The commission emphasised its commitment to resolving the issue in line with industry regulations and global best practices. It also urged residents to remain calm and follow all safety and health guidelines issued by relevant authorities.
