Pakistan: Transporters Threaten Nationwide Strike After Eid Over Fuel Price Hike

Transport operators in Karachi, a major port city in southern Pakistan, have warned of a possible nationwide strike after Eid following recent increases in fuel prices, raising concerns about disruptions to the movement of goods across the country.

The warning was issued by the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance, whose president, Malik Shehzad Awan, said discussions were ongoing with transport unions and stakeholders in different parts of the country.

Awan criticised the steady rise in petroleum prices over the past two months, stating that diesel prices had gone up by more than Rs20 per litre, while petrol had also recorded a significant increase. He noted that despite the higher fuel costs during the month of Ramazan, transporters had so far refrained from increasing fares.

According to him, fuel price hikes do not only affect transporters but also contribute directly to rising inflation, as higher transport costs are passed on to consumers through increased prices of food and other essential goods. He said the situation had made operations increasingly difficult for transporters.

Awan further alleged that agreements previously reached between transporters and the government had not been implemented, adding that both the federal government and the Punjab government were responsible for the current impasse. He recalled a past 10-day nationwide strike by transporters, warning that similar action could be taken again if their demands are ignored.

The development adds to growing economic pressure in Pakistan, where rising fuel prices continue to impact businesses and households alike.
