The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria has directed its members across the country to inspect their fuel dispensing meters following a warning from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority over possible under-dispensing at filling stations.
PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
He said the association held an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council on Tuesday after the regulator raised concerns about the accuracy of dispensing equipment at retail outlets.
According to him, members were immediately asked to examine their meters, with some filling station operators already beginning the checks.
Gillis-Harry explained that dispensing equipment can become inaccurate after prolonged use, potentially resulting in customers receiving less fuel than they paid for. He also noted that faulty equipment could sometimes dispense more fuel than the amount recorded on the meter.
He said PETROAN was taking the NMDPRA warning seriously and was engaging its members to identify and correct equipment problems.
The association also urged motorists to pay attention to the figures displayed on fuel pumps while purchasing petrol and to request receipts after transactions.
Gillis-Harry advised consumers to know the fuel capacity of their vehicles and compare it with the quantity shown on the dispensing meter. He said filling station workers are also encouraged to ask customers to monitor the meter during and after fuelling.
He added that PETROAN works with the Weights and Measures Division of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the NMDPRA to ensure that dispensing meters remain functional and accurate.
The NMDPRA had warned filling station operators that outlets found under-dispensing petroleum products could face sanctions, including the possible withdrawal of their operating licences.
Gillis-Harry assured motorists that PETROAN members would continue to ensure that customers receive the quantity of fuel they pay for, as the association steps up checks across its network.
