Rat Infestation Disrupts UK’s Nuclear Plant Construction

Workers at the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant construction site in the UK are facing a major rat infestation, sparking health and safety concerns. The issue, particularly near the canteens, has prompted calls for urgent action from unions.

One worker stated, “They’re all over. You see them just sat there, looking at you,” adding that the problem has worsened over time. Unions, including Unite and GMB, urged EDF, the French energy giant overseeing the project, to take immediate steps to control the infestation.

Despite assurances, this disruption is just one of many challenges facing the ambitious nuclear project, which aims to power 6 million homes by the 2030s. The plant is expected to contribute 7% of the UK’s electricity needs, but its development has been plagued by delays and financial pressures.

EDF said, “A specialist company has carried out a survey, and measures are in place to address the issue.”
