Reps to Host First-Ever National Renewable Energy Conference in Lagos

The House of Representatives will host its maiden National Legislative Conference on Renewable Energy in Lagos on May 5 and 6, bringing together lawmakers, industry experts, and stakeholders to chart a path for Nigeria’s energy future.

Announcing the event in Abuja, Rep. Àfam Ogene, Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, said the conference would focus on legislation, investment opportunities, and strategies for Nigeria’s energy transition.

“The conference is tailored toward developing a national legislative framework on renewable energy,” Ogene stated.“Recent reforms in the energy sector make this the right time to align our laws with the new realities.”

He cited the Fifth Alteration Bill 2022 (No.33) and the Electricity Act 2023, now law, which decentralize electricity governance, empowering states to legislate and issue licenses for power generation, transmission, and distribution.

“With the National Integrated Electricity Policy 2025 in place, states now have a clear framework to create electricity markets, and renewable energy—especially solar—offers the lowest-cost solution for off-grid communities,” he added.

Ogene emphasized that the event would not just be about dialogue but delivering concrete policy and legislative recommendations to boost both public and private sector investment in renewables.“It’s also about increasing public understanding of the legislature’s role in accelerating renewable energy adoption,” he said.

The conference is being organized by the House Committee on Renewable Energy, in collaboration with the Office of the Speaker Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, and supported by the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

International guests will include the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and parliamentary delegations from South Africa, Ghana, and Gambia, who will showcase collaborative efforts and best practices in renewable energy lawmaking.
