Seplat Energy, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has flagged off the 2025 edition of its flagship healthcare initiative, Eye Can See, in Owerri, Imo State, bringing free eye care services to thousands of residents.
The programme, held under the Seplat Energy Joint Venture (JV), continues to deliver life-changing interventions through cataract surgeries, distribution of reading glasses, and public health education, particularly to underserved communities.
“At Seplat Energy, we believe that true corporate success is measured not only by financial performance, but by the positive and enduring impact we create in the lives of the people and communities we serve,” said Ibi-Ada Itotoi, Managing Director of Seplat East Onshore Limited, represented by Emmanuel Otokhine.
Since its inception in 2012, Eye Can See has provided free eye care to over 22,084 patients, conducted 726 eye surgeries, and distributed 12,307 prescription glasses, according to Chioma Afe, Director, External Affairs & Social Performance at Seplat Energy.
Afe noted, “This initiative—delivered in partnership with the NNPCL—not only restores sight but restores dignity, productivity, and opportunity.”The launch event drew support from government officials and community leaders.
The Acting Permanent Secretary of the Imo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Austin Okeji, praised the initiative and expressed the state’s readiness to partner with focused organizations like Seplat and NNPCL.Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Gas Development, Emeka Mgbudem, called the programme “true impact,” adding: “This is not an ordinary act of charity, but a demonstration of commitment to people’s well-being.”Beneficiaries like Veronica Okereke, 73, and Charles Njoku, both expressed deep gratitude for the surgeries that restored their sight.
The Eye Can See programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
The initiative stands as a beacon of corporate social investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, with Seplat Energy and NNPCL reaffirming their commitment to delivering health and hope to host communities.
