A petrol tanker accident triggered a fire outbreak on Thursday evening at Celica Junction, near Adegbayi along New Ife Road in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
The incident, which occurred around 6:30pm, involved a fuel-laden tanker and two vehicles. In a statement released the following day, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Akinyinka Akinyemi, said the tanker was transporting 33,000 litres of petrol when its brakes reportedly failed. It lost control, collided with a Toyota Prado and another car, then overturned and burst into flames.
Firefighters from both state and federal fire services rushed to the scene and managed to stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, including an NNPC filling station. The operation was led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Adeniyi Adesina.
While the fire completely destroyed the tanker and one vehicle, the Prado was pushed into a drainage channel. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded.
The fire was brought under control by 10pm with the help of security and emergency agencies, including the police, NSCDC, Amotekun Corps, and traffic officials. Early investigations point to mechanical failure as the cause of the crash. Swift emergency response was credited with preventing further damage.
