The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recorded 131 incidents of infrastructure vandalism in 2025, even as it achieved an all-time high in electricity transmission, the company has announced.
TCN’s Managing Director and CEO, Sule Abdulaziz, described 2025 as a historic year for the company and Nigeria’s power sector in a year-end message to staff, partners, and stakeholders.
Despite challenges such as vandalism and operational constraints, TCN achieved a peak electricity transmission of 5,801.84 megawatts on March 4, accompanied by a daily energy delivery of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours, the highest ever recorded on the national grid. Abdulaziz attributed the achievement to significant investments in infrastructure rehabilitation, transformer capacity expansion, and ongoing maintenance of transmission assets.
“While 2025 posed many challenges, including infrastructure vandalism and liquidity issues, our team’s resilience and dedication have been exceptional,” Abdulaziz said.
The company also commissioned 82 new power transformers between January 2024 and November 2025, adding over 8,500 megavolt-amperes to the national grid to boost reliability and capacity.
Vandalism, however, remains a major threat to grid stability. Abdulaziz stated that TCN recorded 131 incidents across its network from January to November 2025.
He said the company is collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser, security agencies, and local vigilante groups to curb these attacks while continuing community engagement and awareness campaigns to protect critical infrastructure.
The TCN CEO highlighted other sector reforms in 2025, including the company’s unbundling and the launch of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). Donor-funded projects worth over $1.16 billion were also advanced during the year, including the Abuja Feeding Scheme, which involves building five new substations and a 330kV transmission line.
Abdulaziz expressed gratitude to TCN staff, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu, security agencies, development partners, and stakeholders for their support. He also extended condolences to families of staff who passed away in 2025.
Looking forward to 2026, TCN plans to intensify efforts to increase grid capacity, stability, and efficiency, while deepening collaboration with NISO and other partners to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.
