Tegbe Promises End to Grid Collapses After Senate Confirmation

Nigeria’s new Minister of Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has pledged to tackle the country’s recurring grid collapses and improve electricity supply after being confirmed by the Senate.

Speaking during his screening at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Tegbe assured lawmakers that urgent reforms would be introduced to stabilise the power sector and address long-standing challenges affecting electricity distribution across the country.

He described the repeated collapse of the national grid as a sign of deeper structural problems within the sector, including weak coordination, poor technical standards and inadequate gas supply to power generation companies.

The minister-designate announced a 100-day reform plan aimed at improving grid stability and promised to introduce a public performance dashboard that Nigerians can use to monitor progress.

“If there are no results in three months, there will be none in six. Nigerians should hold us accountable,” Tegbe said during the screening.

He also vowed to confront sabotage and vandalism of power infrastructure, saying some individuals were benefiting from the sector’s failures.

According to him, the government would work closely with security agencies to protect critical electricity assets nationwide.

Lawmakers raised concerns over the industry’s worsening liquidity crisis, estimated at about N6tn, as well as the poor state of transmission infrastructure. Tegbe responded by promising reforms that would improve coordination between generation, transmission and distribution companies while expanding metering and renewable energy projects.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin said reliable electricity remained essential for economic growth and urged the new minister to deliver quick and measurable results.

Tegbe was nominated by President Bola Tinubu following the resignation of former power minister Adebayo Adelabu, who left office to pursue the Oyo State governorship race.
