TotalEnergies CEO Warns Europe Against Overdependence on US LNG

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne has cautioned European countries not to lean too heavily on liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States, even as they reduce their reliance on Russian energy.

Speaking on LCI Television, Pouyanne pointed out that while the U.S. currently supplies roughly 40% of Europe’s LNG needs, growing pressure from Washington to further boost imports could create a new dependency. “There is a risk of simply swapping Russian dependence for American dependence,” he said, highlighting the strategic challenges Europe faces in diversifying its energy sources.

The comments come amid ongoing discussions about energy security in Europe, as nations seek reliable alternatives to Russian gas while managing supply costs and political considerations.

Pouyanne’s warning underscores the delicate balance Europe must maintain as it navigates global energy politics and seeks long-term stability in its energy mix.
