President Donald Trump stated that the U.S. has no immediate plans to penalize China for importing Russian oil, though he left the door open for potential action in the coming weeks.

Speaking after a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump described the summit as productive and said there was no need to act against Beijing right now. “I may have to consider it in two or three weeks, but not at this moment,” he said.

Trump has threatened sanctions on Russia and secondary penalties on nations buying its oil if Moscow does not end the war in Ukraine. India has already faced a 25% tariff on U.S. goods over its Russian oil imports, but China has not yet been targeted.

The remarks come as Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping work toward a trade deal aimed at easing tensions and lowering tariffs. Experts warn that any sanctions on China could negatively impact its slowing economy.
