₦3 Trillion Needed to Complete NNPCL Road Projects – Umahi

The Federal Government says it needs over ₦3 trillion to complete ongoing road infrastructure projects originally funded under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) tax credit scheme.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed this on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja. He confirmed that NNPCL officially halted its funding of the projects on August 1, prompting urgent intervention from President Bola Tinubu.

According to Umahi, the President has directed that an alternative funding mechanism be put in place to ensure no project under the scheme is abandoned. “Mr. President, sitting as Chairman of the Federal Executive Council, gave a clear directive — no NNPCL road project should stop. We must provide a new source of funding and complete them,” he said.

He explained that the Ministry has compiled a list of all affected projects, which collectively require ₦3 trillion for full completion. Projects suitable for Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models are being identified, but only contractors with the required capacity and financing will be considered.

“This is not business as usual,” Umahi warned. “We won’t allow any contractor to come in hoping the government will later bail them out. We must see your money, your equipment, and your readiness. If you’re not ready, don’t come near.”

He also emphasized that any contractor removed from a project will be replaced without delay. “There’ll be only a one-week gap between disengaging one contractor and mobilizing another. Nigerians deserve better, and we’re not playing games with their future,” he said.

Umahi reassured the public that the Tinubu administration remains fully committed to completing major infrastructure projects and improving connectivity across the country.

“The President has a large heart and a clear vision. These roads are a priority, and we’re doing everything to make sure they’re delivered,” he concluded.
