FG, Edo State Launch Training to Equip Women with CNG Conversion Skills

The Federal Government, working with the Edo State Government and the Lady Mechanic Initiative, has started a five-day training program aimed at teaching 50 women how to convert petrol-powered vehicles to use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

The program was officially launched in Benin City and is being led by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC). Speaking at the event, NADDC’s Director-General, Olumide Osanipin—represented by Deputy Director Joke Onireti—said the training supports the government’s commitment to promoting cleaner and more affordable fuel alternatives following the removal of petrol subsidies.

He emphasized that the training is designed to give participants both technical knowledge and practical experience in CNG conversion, empowering them with skills that can open up job and business opportunities in the automotive sector. Onireti also highlighted the importance of including women in this growing industry.

Sandra Aguebor, founder of the Lady Mechanic Initiative, said this is the first time women are being trained and certified as specialists in CNG conversion. She added that after the training, the women would be placed in workshops and encouraged them to consider starting their own businesses in the future.

This program not only addresses the need for sustainable energy solutions but also aims to increase female participation in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
