A new generation of deep-diving robotic vehicles will soon be deployed off the West African coast, following an order from a Nigerian oil and gas firm.
Marine Platforms (MPL) has commissioned two cutting-edge work-class Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) from the UK’s Forum Energy Technologies (FET). The deal marks the first commercial sale of FET’s newly launched “XLX EVO III” model.
Engineered for complex subsea tasks, the vehicles are built to operate at depths of up to 4,000 meters. They feature several key upgrades, including more powerful thrusters for enhanced performance and a redesigned frame that increases their lifting capacity by over 30%. The new bolted frame also allows the ROVs to carry an additional 350 kilograms of payload.
Kevin Taylor, FET’s Vice President of Subsea Operations, stated that demonstrating this new technology in the field will help solidify the company’s standing in Africa, a region he described as difficult to break into.
The units will be manufactured at FET’s facility in Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, with delivery to Marine Platforms expected in May 2026.
