Turkey to Launch First Overseas Deepwater Drilling Project in Somalia Next Month

Turkey is set to make its first foray into deepwater energy exploration abroad, sending the drilling vessel Cagri Bey to Somali waters in February, the country’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced on Wednesday.
The mission marks Turkey’s initial attempt at offshore exploration outside its own borders.

While officials have not disclosed the size of the targeted reserves or investment details, the operation underscores Turkey’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on imports.

This initiative follows a 2024 energy exploration agreement between Turkey and Somalia. Since then, Turkey has been actively investing in both domestic and international projects to strengthen its energy portfolio.

The Cagri Bey project will focus on offshore Somali regions, with feasibility and technical planning underway to ensure the venture proceeds smoothly. Energy experts say success could open the door to further overseas exploration opportunities for Turkey.
