Anambra State is set to explore waste-to-energy conversion technologies to generate affordable and clean power, according to the Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Julius Chukwuemeka.
“We’re receiving proposals from investors and developers interested in converting Anambra’s large volume of waste into bioenergy,” Chukwuemeka said.
The state has passed its own Electricity Law, empowering it to regulate power generation, distribution, and consumption within its boundaries. Chukwuemeka noted that the law would enable Anambra to enjoy round-the-clock power supply sourced through affordable and eco-friendly means.
“Given that Anambra has one of the highest population densities in the country after Lagos, the volume of waste generated daily could become a significant source of power,” Chukwuemeka explained.
The Anambra Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC) will be unveiled soon to oversee the state’s electricity sector and license operators across multiple energy blocks.
With this development, Anambra is poised to become a model for sub-national power sector reform in Nigeria, providing stable, affordable, and cleaner power supply to its citizens.
