The death toll from the recent fire on Chevron’s Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) oil platform off the coast of Angola has risen to three, following the deaths of two workers who succumbed to injuries sustained in the incident.
The fire broke out on May 20 in the basement of the BBLT platform during scheduled maintenance operations. The platform, part of the Block 14 concession, is operated by Chevron’s Angolan subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company.”All injured workers were transported onshore and received medical care,” authorities said.
A total of 17 people were injured in the blaze, four of them critically.One worker died on May 24, and a second passed away three days later on May 27.
The body of a missing worker was later discovered on the ocean floor but has not yet been retrieved.Although initial reports indicated all personnel had been accounted for, the Angolan National Agency for Oil, Gas and Biofuels later confirmed one individual was unaccounted for — now identified among the deceased.
The fire remains under investigation, and the exact cause has yet to be determined.The BBLT platform is located approximately 97 km offshore from the Cabinda coast.
