Dangote Secures New Deals to Build World’s Largest Refinery by 2028

Nigeria’s Dangote Group is pushing ahead with its ambition to create the world’s largest single-location refinery, sealing two major international partnerships aimed at accelerating its expansion plans.

During a briefing in Mumbai, Aliko Dangote announced a new agreement with India’s Engineers India Ltd (EIL) to lead the development of a second refining train that will raise total capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day within the next three years. EIL played a central role in delivering the refinery’s first 650,000 bpd unit, which began operations in 2024 and has already reshaped fuel supply across West Africa.

The expansion will include a new propane dehydrogenation unit, expected to push polypropylene output from 830,000 tonnes annually to 2.4 million tonnes, positioning Nigeria as a major player in global petrochemicals.

This deal follows another partnership sealed recently with U.S.-based Honeywell, which will supply advanced automation, digital optimisation, and refining technologies to improve efficiency and strengthen long-term reliability as the facility scales up.

Dangote praised EIL’s performance on the first phase, saying the new collaboration reflects the company’s confidence in the Indian firm’s engineering and project management capabilities. EIL’s leadership also highlighted the global significance of the expansion, noting that the refinery is set to become one of the largest ever built at a single location.
