FG Launches $150,000 Solar Testing Lab to Tackle Fake Imports, Promote Local Production

The Federal Government has introduced a new high-tech solar simulation and testing centre aimed at stopping the flood of substandard solar products into the country and boosting Nigeria’s renewable energy manufacturing efforts.

The $150,000 facility, located at the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) headquarters in Abuja, was donated by Chinese tech firm Huawei following a bilateral deal signed during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024.

REA’s Managing Director, Abba Aliyu, said the centre would serve as a national hub to certify solar components and ensure that only reliable equipment is used for off-grid energy projects. He noted that the lab can simulate real-life weather conditions—such as heat and humidity—to test the durability and quality of solar panels, batteries, and other equipment.

According to Aliyu, the goal is to eliminate fake and second-hand solar products from the Nigerian market and to support local manufacturers by creating a level playing field.

Equipped with 18 modern machines, including battery analysers, power meters, and climate simulators, the facility is the first of its kind in the country. Huawei confirmed it fully funded the project as part of its commitment to Nigeria’s clean energy goals.

REA’s Director of Technical Services, Umar Umar, said the lab would transform how solar technology is evaluated in Nigeria. Instead of physically testing panels in various locations, engineers can now simulate weather conditions from places like Sokoto or Delta State—all from one lab.

Huawei’s Board Director in Nigeria, Zhang Jing, described the initiative as part of the company’s support for Nigeria’s push toward energy security. He added that the centre would also be used for training and research, making it a long-term investment in local expertise.

Plans are underway to replicate similar labs across REA’s regional offices, reinforcing the government’s efforts to ensure quality in the renewable energy sector and encourage local production.
