FG Takes Steps to Fix Gas Supply and Power Tariff Issues

The federal government is taking action to fix ongoing problems with gas supply and electricity tariffs that are threatening the operation of several key gas-powered plants in Nigeria.

In a recent meeting at the NNPC headquarters in Abuja, top officials — including Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and Minister of Finance, Wale Edun — met with leaders from NNPC Ltd. to find solutions. Their main concern was the financial strain caused by unpaid bills and tariff shortfalls, which are putting power plants in Maiduguri, Kano, and Okpai at risk.

NNPC warned that if these issues are not resolved soon, electricity supply in those areas could suffer, affecting both the economy and daily life.

Minister Ekpo stressed how important stable power is for economic development, particularly in northern cities and for the national grid. He said fixing these bottlenecks is key to making sure the country’s gas-to-power system delivers real value.

Minister Edun added that a joint effort is needed to create a lasting financial plan to keep the power plants running and support Nigeria’s energy goals.

All parties agreed to hold another meeting with the Minister of Power soon, aiming for quick and practical steps to keep the affected power stations operating smoothly.
