Fuel Prices Hit N1,400 per Litre After Dangote Refinery Hike

Fuel prices across Nigeria surged after Dangote Refinery raised its gantry rates, pushing petrol prices to as high as N1,400 per litre in some areas. Diesel prices also climbed, with some stations in Abuja selling it for up to N1,750 per litre.

The refinery increased its petrol gantry price to N1,175 per litre and diesel to N1,620 per litre, citing global crude oil fluctuations. Following the announcement, filling stations like Ranoil and Empire immediately adjusted their pump prices.

At an MRS station in Abuja, petrol was set to rise to N1,200 per litre, up from N1,092. The station temporarily ran out of petrol on Monday before the price change.

Global oil markets remain volatile, with Brent crude hitting $98.86 per barrel while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell to $88.11 per barrel. The fluctuations followed comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting the conflict with Iran could be nearing an end.

The increase is affecting transportation costs. Taxi fares in Abuja, for instance, have risen from N1,200 to N1,500 per trip. Commuters are urging government intervention to prevent further fare hikes.

Industry experts warn that if prices remain unchecked, petrol and diesel could surge even higher. Independent marketers say they sell fuel at the price they purchase from refineries and depots, highlighting that the main benefit of the Dangote Refinery is preventing fuel scarcity rather than reducing costs.
