Kano Power Line Set For Full Upgrade in 12 Months

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has launched a project to upgrade the Kumbotso-Dakata 132kV transmission line in Kano, aiming to improve electricity reliability in Northern Nigeria.

According to TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the reconductoring project is focused on replacing outdated components with higher-capacity materials. This includes installing modern conductors, Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) for improved communication, and durable insulators designed to withstand harsh conditions. The upgrade will benefit key areas such as the Dakata Industrial Zone and the soon-to-be-completed Walalambe Substation.

The company expects the project to be completed within 12 months. TCN’s General Manager, Transmission Services, Ali Sharifai, described it as more than just an infrastructure upgrade. He said it represents a step toward building trust in the national grid and ensuring stable power for industries and communities.

This Kano project is part of a broader initiative by TCN to modernize Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Other efforts include ongoing reconductoring of the Kankia-Katsina line, scheduled to take about six weeks, and upgrades in Port Harcourt to increase capacity and reduce outages.

Since 2020, TCN has completed 22 projects, including four new 132kV substations and enhancements to 15 others with larger transformers and improved equipment.

TCN emphasized its commitment to playing a key role in Nigeria’s economic growth through continuous improvements in power transmission infrastructure.
