KEDCO Starts Receiving 10MW of Solar Power from Haske Plant

(KEDCO) has begun offtaking 10 megawatts of electricity from the Haske Solar Plant, located in the Challawa Industrial Cluster in Kano.

The arrangement follows a Power Purchase Agreement with Haske Solar Company Ltd, a project developed by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI). The solar facility, commissioned in January 2023, is part of Nigeria’s growing push for renewable energy.

The agreement was signed in Abuja by KEDCO’s MD/CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, alongside the Executive Director of Portfolio Management, Mr. Tajudeen Datti Ahmed, with Yusuf Yahaya, Managing Director of Future Energies Africa, in attendance.

Dr. Jimeta described the partnership as a significant step toward providing stable and sustainable electricity to KEDCO’s customers. He said integrating solar power into the grid will enhance network efficiency and support the nation’s energy transition. The 10MW supply is expected to strengthen energy security and bolster industrial and economic activities in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States.

Energy from the Haske plant is being transmitted through the Abattoir Injection Substation and delivered to industrial clients via the NBC 11KV and Ceramic 11KV feeders.

Yusuf Yahaya of Future Energies Africa highlighted the company’s commitment to renewable energy and its goal of delivering affordable and reliable electricity to the region. KEDCO also commended the Federal Government, NSIA, MOFI, and Kano State Government for completing what is currently Nigeria’s largest grid-connected solar power facility.

The utility company stated that additional renewable projects are being considered as part of its broader plan to diversify energy sources and ensure uninterrupted power supply.
