Libya and Nigeria Move to Restart Natural Gas Pipeline Project to Europe

Libya and Nigeria are taking steps to revive a long-stalled natural gas pipeline project aimed at transporting Nigerian gas to Europe via Libyan territory. The initiative is expected to strengthen the energy ties between the two nations and expand Nigeria’s gas export capacity.

Officials from both countries recently met in Tripoli, including Libya’s Minister of Oil, Khalifa Abdul Sadiq, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, and NNPC CEO Bayo Ojulari. The discussions focused on reactivating the proposed pipeline and exchanging technical information necessary for feasibility studies.

Once these studies are complete, Libya and Nigeria plan to sign a memorandum of understanding to outline the project’s legal and operational framework. Experts describe the proposed pipeline as a strategic route that could enhance Libya’s role as a key energy corridor while opening new markets for Nigerian gas in Europe.

The revival of the project comes at a time when European countries are seeking to diversify their energy sources, making a direct supply line from Africa increasingly significant. Dialogue between Nigeria and Libya on this initiative has been ongoing for years, including a 2024 meeting held on the sidelines of the Gastech Exhibition in Houston.

If implemented, the pipeline would mark a major step in connecting African natural gas resources to European markets, bolstering regional energy cooperation and economic growth.
