The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has entered into a partnership with the European Union to strengthen efforts in combating oil spills and safeguarding the environment in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions.
The collaboration was formalised during a high-level meeting in Abuja between NOSDRA’s Director-General, Chukwuemeka Woke, and the EU Delegation. Key discussion points included enhancing environmental impact assessments, rehabilitating areas damaged by artisanal refining, introducing advanced spill response equipment, and improving staff expertise through specialised training.
Woke highlighted that the initiative is vital in tackling the environmental devastation caused by illegal oil bunkering and artisanal refining, stressing that global support could help attract the resources and reforms needed for lasting environmental recovery.
EU Acting Head of Delegation, Ruben Alba, praised NOSDRA’s proactive engagement and revealed plans to set up a technical working group to review the agency’s mandate and outline areas where EU assistance could be most effective.
The session, attended by senior officials from both sides, featured a detailed presentation on Nigeria’s oil spill challenges and the urgent need for stronger technical and policy support. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing cooperation for sustainable results.
