TCN Denies Explosion, Says Rain Caused Enugu, Anambra Blackout

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed reports by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) that a midnight explosion at one of its substations triggered a power outage in parts of Anambra and Enugu States.

In a statement issued on Thursday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah clarified that no explosion occurred at the company’s Onitsha sub-region facilities. Instead, she explained, the outage recorded around 2:34 a.m. on August 21, 2025, was caused by an insulation flashover. According to her, rainfall had affected the porcelain insulator of the Red Phase Jumper conductor linked to Busbar 1, leading to a temporary disruption.

The company further noted that supply was restored before 6 p.m. on the same day and stressed that no equipment was damaged in the process. TCN also announced a scheduled maintenance outage set for August 31 and September 1, which will focus on replacing aged insulators in the affected section.

The firm urged EEDC to exercise caution when communicating with the public, warning that misleading reports could create unnecessary panic.

“We want to emphasize that there was no explosion, no switchgear damage, and no equipment loss. Accuracy in public communication is essential, and any attempt to misinform should be avoided,” the statement added.
