U.S. Power Grid Could Struggle This Summer, FERC Warns

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued a stark warning: the U.S. electric grid may not withstand the intense strain expected this summer, as extreme heat, surging AI-driven electricity demand, and accelerated plant retirements converge to challenge reliability.

In its latest summer outlook, FERC identified key regions—including Texas, the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic, New England, and the Southwest—as particularly vulnerable.

“If such conditions occur,” FERC cautioned, “it may require operational mitigations to avoid facing reliability issues”—regulator language for potential rolling blackouts and higher power bills.

The West and Southeast face a 40–60% probability of above-normal temperatures, while much of the rest of the country isn’t far behind. Prolonged heat waves are expected to spike air conditioning usage, while wildfires, droughts, and faltering renewable sources may worsen the situation.

“Hope your air conditioner’s feeling brave—because the U.S. power grid is about to get a workout it may not be ready for,” wrote Julianne Geiger for Oilprice.com.Compounding the challenge is the growing electricity appetite of AI data centers, which consume massive amounts of energy just to stay cool.

At the same time, traditional coal and gas plants are being phased out faster than clean energy alternatives can replace them.“The grid might hold,” Geiger notes, “but it’ll be holding on with white knuckles—and possibly a backup generator.”

Natural gas prices are also on the rise, adding more fuel to what could be a costly and uncomfortable summer for millions of Americans.
