Azerbaijan Vows to Maintain Energy Ties with Ukraine Despite Russian Strikes

Azerbaijan has pledged to press ahead with its energy cooperation with Ukraine even after recent Russian attacks on its oil and gas facilities in the country.

President Ilham Aliyev, in a phone call with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, condemned the strikes on an oil storage facility owned by Azerbaijan’s state energy firm SOCAR and other installations, including a gas compressor station delivering Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine.

Both leaders stressed that the incidents would not derail joint projects, reaffirming their commitment to expanding energy links.

The strikes, carried out earlier in the week, targeted an oil depot in Ukraine’s Odesa region and a gas pumping station that also handles liquefied natural gas imports from the U.S. and Azerbaijan, according to Ukrainian officials and sources.

Just last month, Ukraine conducted its first test run of Azerbaijani gas via the Transbalkan pipeline, announcing plans to significantly ramp up imports.

Russian forces have intensified missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian energy and infrastructure sites in recent months, often hitting facilities key to the country’s power and fuel supply.
