The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) is gearing up to launch a large-scale metering programme across its service areas as part of a $500 million World Bank-supported initiative designed to reform Nigeria’s power distribution network.
The project, implemented under the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), will see over 128,000 prepaid meters distributed at no cost to customers in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States. The rollout aims to improve electricity billing accuracy, boost transparency, and phase out the long-criticised estimated billing system.
KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, confirmed in a statement that the company had reached an advanced stage of preparation. However, a specific start date for installations was not disclosed.
According to the company’s Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar S. Jimeta, the first phase of the initiative will prioritise unmetered customers within the three states. He said the effort reflects KEDCO’s commitment to improving service delivery and ensuring customers are billed strictly for what they consume.
The DISREP programme, jointly implemented by the Federal Government and the World Bank, seeks to strengthen the financial and operational performance of electricity distribution companies across Nigeria. It also focuses on closing the metering gap, reducing commercial losses, modernising power infrastructure, and improving accountability within the sector.
Through this initiative, KEDCO aims to enhance customer satisfaction, reduce billing disputes, and promote a more sustainable electricity supply system in northern Nigeria.
