The Lagos State Government has entered into new power agreements with three electricity generation companies as part of efforts to strengthen electricity supply across the state and reduce dependence on the national grid.
The agreements were formalised at Lagos House, Marina, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu overseeing the signing. The arrangement was concluded through the state’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Under the new deal, the participating firms – Mainland Power Limited, Akute Independent Power Plant, and Fenchurch Power Limited are expected to expand their combined electricity generation capacity significantly over the next few years.
Although the companies currently generate about 60 megawatts collectively, the agreement sets a target of scaling output to between 200MW and 400MW within two to three years, with full implementation expected to support broader energy reforms in Lagos by 2029.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the initiative as a practical step toward improving service delivery and easing the power challenges faced by residents and businesses. He stressed the importance of commitment from all parties to ensure the success of the projects.
Officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources explained that the strategy focuses on upgrading existing facilities and reviving dormant power assets without placing additional strain on state finances, instead relying on a competitive market-driven model.
Details from the agreement show that Mainland Power’s Ikeja GRA facility currently supplies electricity to key public institutions, while the Akute plant now being repositioned under Fenchurch Power is undergoing rehabilitation after years of inactivity.
On the island axis, Viathan Engineering manages integrated power assets that serve government buildings, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure.
Stakeholders involved in the project expressed confidence that the initiative would attract more investment into Lagos’ energy sector and improve reliable electricity access for residents.
