Nigeria’s Senate Committee on Public Accounts has summoned former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, and members of his management team over alleged discrepancies amounting to N210 trillion in the company’s financial reports.

The committee’s chairman, Ahmed Wadada, announced the decision on Thursday during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that the summon followed what lawmakers described as an unsatisfactory response from the national oil company to queries on its audited financial statements covering 2017 to 2023.

According to Wadada, the committee carried out a detailed review of the financial records to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

He explained that the probe began in May 2025 after concerns emerged during the review of reports issued by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation for the 2019 and 2020 financial years.

As part of the investigation, lawmakers also examined the audited accounts prepared by external auditors and reviewed financial records of the former National Petroleum Investment Management Services, now operating as NNPCL Upstream Investment Management Services, for the same period.

Wadada said the committee raised 19 queries seeking explanations for inconsistencies identified in the documents, adding that Kyari and other officials involved during the period will be required to appear before the panel to provide clarifications.
