Nigeria’s Oil Production Rises to 1.72 Million Barrels per Day in September

Nigeria’s daily crude oil and condensate production increased by 2.34 per cent in September 2026 to an average of 1.717 million barrels, according to data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The increase helped the country maintain crude oil production above its Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota for the fifth consecutive month.

NUPRC Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, said Nigeria’s crude oil production, excluding condensates, averaged 1.53 million barrels per day in September.

This was 30,000 barrels above the country’s OPEC allocation of 1.5 million barrels per day, representing 102 per cent of its assigned quota.

The regulator also reported that combined crude oil and condensate output reached a daily high of 1.84 million barrels during the month, while production fell to a low of 1.68 million barrels on the weakest day.

Nigeria’s crude oil production has remained at or above its OPEC target since May. Average daily output stood at 1.53 million barrels in May, rose to 1.55 million in June, and then declined to 1.51 million in July and 1.50 million in August.

The NUPRC attributed September’s improvement to stable operations across most producing fields and the absence of major pipeline outages. These conditions helped operators maintain production for longer periods and move crude oil more efficiently from producing locations to export terminals.

The commission said the latest performance reflected ongoing efforts by oil companies and other industry participants to improve operational efficiency, protect production facilities and strengthen reliability across the upstream sector.

A breakdown of production by terminal and stream showed that Forcados Terminal recorded average output of 320,320 barrels per day in September, making it the largest contributor among the terminals listed in the report.

Bonny Terminal followed with an average of 303,270 barrels per day.

The sustained improvement in production offers support to Nigeria’s efforts to maintain crude oil supply and meet its OPEC allocation, although the industry continues to face challenges associated with infrastructure reliability and crude evacuation.
